This article is about the center for a Green High-Performance Computing project. Governor Deval Patrick promised $25 million to help fund construction of a Green High-Performance Computing Center (GHPCC) last month. This center will be located in Holyoke, Massachusetts and costed $100 million.
According to him, the center will start the role this fall. The role is providing an infrastructure for research computing in life sciences, clean energy, and green computing. Also, it will promote innivation in downtown Holyoke.
Last year, Boston University organized a consortium with the Massachusetts Institue of Technology and the University of Massachusetts to cooperate on the development of the center. According to Andrei Ruckenstrein, who is BU vice president and associate provost for research, the GHPCC represents a indivatice partnership amont state government, research universities, and private industry that "provides a vital piece of infrastructure for scientists and researchers, acting both as a hub for an unprecedented level of collaboration in research and development and education among higher education institutions, and as a catalyst for technology-based economic development."
In my opinion, the center could provide plenty of computing power to cope with highly complex issues about climate or health diseases. Therefore, the governor's donation is a significant component of the resources required to build the facility.
